The first day's matches of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2007 International Hockey Tournament ended on August 8th.The Australian team topped in the women's competition for the time being, however, Chinese team was the biggest winner in the first day. The Chinese men's team managed to draw with Pakistan, which threw some mist on the situation of the men's tournament. Yet, the Australian team still outshined all the other teams.

In the opening match, the Chinese women's hockey team beat the powerful Argentina 3:0, with the help of Ma Yibo, the captain of the Chinese team, who scored two goals in the match. The last goal was scored by Tang Chunling. Australia walked away from the South Africa 4:0, and the four goals were contributed by Sanders and her other three fellow players.

After the first round, Australia topped the women's teams thanks to its goal difference. However, China became the biggest winner in the first round since they won their powerful opponent with 3 goal difference under the circumstances that South Africa is weaker than the other three strong teams involved in the tournament.

The Chinese men's hockey team managed to draw with Pakistan despite the Pakistani team seized two short corner opportunities to take a 2-0 lead. The Chinese team came from behind to launch a series of fierce offensive attacks in the second half and equalized the score within three minutes. Australia won Malaysia easily 4:0, showing their formidable strength.

Compared with the women's teams, the situation of the men's teams are quite different, because Australia obviously outshines the other Asian three teams. Pakistan is stronger than China and Malaysia in the strength, however, China tied with Pakistan in their first competition, which offered China an opportunity to strive for top 2.

The situation of the men's teams became complex since Pakistan drew with China, and Australia will probably win all the games. Provided that both Pakistan and China win Malaysia, the goal difference will be taken into consideration.

The second round of both men's and women's group preliminaries will be held Aug.9. The women's teams will compete in the morning, with Argentina against Australia at 8:30 am and China against South Africa at 10:30 am. The two matches of men's teams will be held at 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm consecutively, with Australia against Pakistan and China against Malaysia.

The situation of the women's teams is relatively clear. The match of Argentina against Australia is quite crucial, and the former will definitely be kicked out of top 2 if they lose the game. If China gains the upper hand in the match against South Africa, they will be in a favorable position to strive for the first two places.

The situation of the men's teams is quite complex. Australia can ensure its top 2 positions ahead of schedule if they defeat Pakistan. Since China and Malaysia are well-matched in strength, it's hard to predict the result of the match China against Malaysia. Nevertheless, China must win this match if they want to rank top 2 in the tournament, because it's obviously not practical to expect defeating Australia in the last round.
