The preliminaries of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2007 International Hockey Tournament concluded on August 11. Malaysia ended up with a draw with Pakistan while Australia and China entered the men's finals. There was no suspense in the women's event, with China and Australia qualifying for the final as expected.

In the final round of the women's preliminaries, Australia beat China 3:0 to rank first in the group with three striahgt wins, followed by China with two wins and one defeat. Argentina whitewashed South Africa 6:0 to settle for the third place with one win and two losses, and South Africa, with three straight defeats, finished last in the group.

Among the four teams Australia, Argentina and China, closed matched in strength, are three of the world's strong teams. African champions South Africa is comparatively weak. As Argentina has just concluded its Pan American Games competitions, several of its best players were absent from the current tournament, which has greatly affected its performance.

In such circumstances, Australia and China, by defeating their respective opponents Argentina and South Africa, secured the first two places before going into the last round. Argentina and South Africa would compete with each other to vie for the third place.

In the men's final round, Pakistan had to live with a 1-1 tie with Malaysia who was already out of the finals, thus losing their last chance to further competition. The tie also made another match between China and Australia meaningless, as China was able to enter the finals despite its 1-6 defeat by Australia.

The final results for the men's heats: Australia ranks first with 2 wins and 1 tie, followed by China (one win, one tie and 1 loss), Pakistan (three ties) and Malaysia (one tie and two losses).

Among the four men's teams, Australia is the strongest and Pakistan more powerful than China and Malaysia. But Pakistan failed to give full play to its strength and lost the chance to make the finals with three draws. The Chinese team, which succeeded in turning the tide in the first two matches to draw with Pakistan and win over Malaysia respectively, showed high morale. However, as it was known to all, without Malaysia's unexpected draw with Pakistan China, with a goal difference of only one goal, would have a slim chance of making the finals.
