Australia beat China 5:3 to clinch the women's title

In the women's final showdown of the 2007 "Good Luck Beijing" International Hockey Tournament held at Beijing's Olympic Green Hockey Field on the evening of August 13, Australia drew with host China 2:2 after 85 minutes' hard struggle. In the following penalty stroke competition, Australia outplayed China 3:1, thus securing the title with a final score of 5:3.

Ranking third and fifth respectively in the FIH world rankings, both Australian and China are strong teams in the world. In a group match between the two, Australia won with a score of 3:0. But as it was not a critical match, both teams had meant to preserve their strength. In today's final, however, both teams fielded their mainstay to vie for the championship.

Three minutes into the opening of the game, the Chinese team launched a counterattack, but as the shot carried no force it was blocked by the Australian goalkeeper. At the seventh minute, with a free hit by his teammate, the Chinese player before the goal snatched the chance to shoot but it was again blocked by the opposing goalkeeper. Three minutes later, the Chinese team gained their first short corner, but again they failed to earn any point.

At the 17th minute, the Australian team gained a short corner. With good teamwork No. 12 Blyth made a successful tip shot which helped Australia lead with 1:0. At the 20th minute, the Australian team got another short corner but this time they shot for nothing, as it was blocked by a Chinese player.

At the 24th minute, China launched a threatening offensive, which almost forced an own goal by the Austrlian side. At the 28th minute, with another short corner, China's Chen Zhaoxia After cooperation, No. 3, Chen Zhaoxia managed a field goal to level score at 1:1. This was also the first goal against for the Australian team in the entire tournament.

At the 30th minute, the Australian team gained two consecutive short corners but both attacks were broken by the Chinese team. In the following 5 minutes, the Chinese offensive took the upper hand but the following attacks they made did not help them much. The score stood at 1:1 until the end of the first half.

Two minutes into the second half, China won a short corner but shot in vain. At the 4th minute, China tried for goal again but it was again blocked. At the 9th minute, the Australian team attempted at goal, which was also blocked.

At the 11th minute, Australia gained three short corners in a row, but failed to deliver good teamwork to form any threat to China. At the 15th minute, No. 10 of the Chinese team, Gao Lihua, got a green card for a foul. Five minutes later, China gained a short corner but again the attack was broken by their opponents.

At the 22nd minute, China's No. 22 Song Qingling gained possession of the ball from a fast free hit and succeeded in shooting the goal from the left side of the goal, thus raising the score to 2:1. In less than two minutes, however, the Australian team forced the score to a 2:2 draw, after Chen Qiuqi, China's No. 19, tried to block the shot only to drive the ball into her own goal.

In the following 10 minutes, both squads had some chances of attacks but failed to succeed. The second half ended in a 2:2 draw, so an extra period was called for to decide the winners.

Two minutes into the first half of the extra period, China launched a powerful offensive but the shot was blocked by the Australian goalkeeper. Then China got another short corner but failed again. At the 5th minute, China organized an effective attack and caused a melee before the opposite goal, which, unfortunately, was cleared by Australia.

In the second half of the extra period, the staying power of the Australian players was obviously reduced. The Chinese team, though better stamina, failed to create any shooting opportunities. Finally, the score remained at 2:2 after 85 minutes' hard fight, and the two teams had to come into the final penalty stroke competition.

In the penalty stroke competition, Australian players succeeded in shooting all the first three penalties, while China made only one through captain Ma Yibo. China trailed with 1:3. In the fourth round of penalty stroke, the Chinese goalkeeper successfully blocked the shot, while the Australian goalkeeper did the same, thus ending the whole competition with 5:3 and winning the women's division of this tournament.
